What is a Silent Migraine?

How would you feel if we told you it was possible to have a migraine, but not feel it? While it may sound like a dream come true to chronic migraine sufferers, silent migraines are more dangerous than they sound.

What is a Silent Migraine?

Unlike typical migraines, silent migraines don’t come with head pain or pressure. However, they can be accompanied by an upset stomach, dizziness, and light sensitivity. But because these are also the symptoms of many other disease and conditions, it can be hard to pinpoint if they’re the result of a silent migraine or something else.

Typically, silent migraines are shorter than average migraines, lasting from a few minutes to an hour.

The Danger of Silent Migraines

Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. While most of us would agree that we don’t enjoy being in pain, it’s a necessary bodily function that you certainly wouldn’t want to get rid of.

If you suffer from silent migraines, it can be harder for doctors and physicians to diagnose you as a migraine sufferer. Furthermore, you could still experience the damaging effects of a migraine, even if you don’t realize one is happening. And because you don’t know it’s happening, you’re not going to seek treatment.

Risk Factors for Silent Migraines

Though having one or more risk factors doesn’t guarantee you will suffer/are suffering from silent migraines, it’s important to know if you are at a higher risk for them. You’re at an increased risk for silent migraines if you:

  • Have a family history of migraines
  • Are under the age of 40
  • Are a woman
  • Are menstruating, pregnant, or going through menopause
