When Headaches Should be Cause for Concern

Headaches — they’re something almost everyone has experienced at least once. Because they’re so common, headaches aren’t always taken seriously, with many people writing them off as something that simply happens to everyone. In reality, that’s far from the truth. Though most people have had a headache, chronic headaches and migraines are anything but normal.

Contact your doctor right away if you experience:

  • Headaches that begin after 50.
  • Headaches that suddenly feel much more intense.
  • Headaches accompanied by neurological symptoms, such as vision loss, dizziness, slurred speech, numbness in your arms or hands, and weakness.
  • Headaches that occur predominantly in your temple.
  • Headaches accompanied by fever, stiff neck, or confusion.
  • Headaches after a blow to your head or concussion.

A good rule of thumb is to be concerned about any headaches that are out of the ordinary, a drastic change from your usual headaches, or begin very suddenly.

Understanding Triggers

If you’re someone who gets frequent headaches, it’s important to know what triggers them. Not only will knowing your triggers help you avoid them (and the headache they’ll bring) but it can help you identify headaches caused by other, potentially dangerous, things.

Common headache and migraine triggers are:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Emotional stress
  • Bright or flashing lights
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol

If you avoid your triggers and live headache-free for many years, then they suddenly start up again, you may either have a new, previously unknown, trigger or are suffering from a medical condition that needs to be further examined.

The first step in managing your headaches and staying safe? An assessment from Valencia Headache and Sleep Treatment Center! Headaches of any kind don’t have to be something you just have to live with.
